This listing is for a traditional woman's folk costume from the Sarny area of western Polissya in western Ukraine.
The costume has much in common with the neighboring regions in Ukraine as well as across the border in Belarus. Includes a blouse-chemise, skirt, apron, head wrap, and sash.
Due to the marshlands and forests of Polesia, the peasant population remained better isolated from outside influences and thus preserved a more archaic form of traditional Slavic clothing than in more fertile and well-traveled regions. Natural, homespun fabrics prevail and motifs tend to be more symbolic and geometric than naturalistic. Red and white are the predominant colors seen in the folk dress throughout Polesia. The white elements of this costume are all made of natural linen and the skirt and belt are wool. The headwrap is particularly special and represents the oldest form of headdress worn throughout much of eastern Europe. There were numerous ways to tie the headdress depending on the occasion. This particular example dates to the beginning of the 20th century. Despite its age, the costume remains in quite good condition for wear or for use as a display in a museum or cultural institution. The only area of concern is the skirt waistband, which is heavily frayed and might need to be reinforced to prevent further damage if you plan on wearing it.
For display purposes it is entirely covered by the belt so it would not be visible. A lovely addition to any collection. Please get in touch if you need more costumes from this region as we can get others. A note regarding condition: All of the costumes and textiles that I sell are vintage and have typically seen decades of use resulting in expected wear and tear that add to the history and authenticity of each piece. In case of above average wear, I try to list any significant damages and heavy signs of use in the above description.
Small holes or stains, missing sequins/beads, worn trim, and other marks related to standard wear are common and do not detract from the value of most pieces. Please keep in mind that a vintage textile or garment in very good condition might still show signs of use, storage and age. Unless otherwise noted, all of the items listed for sale are in very good, stable condition and are suitable for use, wear or display.
