This is authentic old (1970s) African hand woven EWE KENTE (Volta Region) cloth from Ghana. The weft face of cloth is called SUKLIKPE (Sugar Cube) and it symbolizes the sweetness of life that is happiness. This is a " Woman size " cloth and measures 76 3/4" (195 cm) x 53 1/2" (136 cm). The cloth is in very good condition with the exception of 2 repairs and minor stains and wear due to usage and age.Kente is an EWE (Ghana - Volta Region) Ceremonial cloth that is hand woven on a horizontal treadle loom. The strips are sewn together into larger pieces of cloths. It takes from several weeks to months for a weaver to complete a cloth like this depending of the design and size! Kente is more than just a cloth but is a visual representation of history, ethics , oral literature , philosophy , moral values and religious beliefs. The Kente cloths history goes back to the 17th Century. In present days is still used as a cloth in Ghana but is also used by collectors of fine woven cloths and artifacts as Wall hanging , sofa or bed covering! A real piece of Authentic African art!
