The doll's hair is a mixture of red and brown. The features are hand molded and painted, and the doll has wonderful fingers and toes, with a label on the bottom of his foot. He is barefoot, and looks to have been created that way. Although he is a caricature, he is a gentle one, compared to most ethnic dolls from this period. I have provided a lot of photos, so you can see the doll in detail.
Norah Wellings created dolls from the 1920's until 1959. She is reported to have looked in the mirror around 1919, and said "Nora you are never going to be beautiful, so you had better make yourself useful". She certainly did, creating dolls first for Chad Valley, and then for her own company that she started with her brother. The majority of the dolls that we find today have "mask" faces (little molded faces that are added to the dolls), and are characterized by a certain "look" to their faces - very pert and slightly sly!
The photos of the doll are slightly lighter than the actual doll; I wanted to make sure you could see all the details. This doll, as were the majority of her very early dolls, has a cloth face with hand drawn and hand molded features.
It measures 9 1/4 tall, and is in wonderful condition. The majority of her dolls had mohair, but this one appears to be yarn - probably for the texture.
The doll has no rips, tears or repairs, and is slightly worn, as commensurate with it's age. There is a light spot on one leg - looks almost like a bit of bleach water splashed on him. The doll is quite rare, and quite charming! Norah Wellings and her brother ran their business together until 1959, when he died. A few months after his death, she decided to close the company, and she burned all the remaining unfinished stock, doll plans and pieces and parts so that no one else could ever make her dolls!Payments required within four days, please.
