This beautiful post-1980 huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in three brown cotton base panels. These panels are decorated with supplementary brocade, all in cotton in rainbow gem tones.
The center panel is wider and more extensively decorated. The central decorative motifs are the plumed serpent motif running horizontally across each panel. The sunburst collar is hand embroidered over velvet and unique to Chichicastenango huipiles.
This is a beautiful example in good condition. There is some wear around the armholes and the embroideru is somewhat worn but not worn through anyplace. I debated evening out the panels before listing but opted to leave it in its original state.
If you would like me to make them even for you, I'll be glad to. The plumed serpent known as Kukulcan, meaning "the feathered serpent, " is the Mayans supreme god. He was the god of the four elements, as well as a creator and the god of resurrection and reincarnation. Measures 31 wide x 25 long. These are great year round. In the winter I wear them over a light sweater and they are cozy. For more great huipils and tops from around the world check out the tops section of our shop!
